Nuclear Submarine

USS SSN 571 was the world’s first operational nuclear-powered submarine and the first to complete a submerged transit of the North Pole on August 3, 1958. Thanks to its nuclear propulsion, the SSN 571 could operate for much longer periods than standard diesel-electric submarines of the era. It set several records in its initial months at sea, primarily related to continuous operational duration.
